Rolf's Stylists Participate at Camp Courage

One of Rolf’s favorite, most emotionally difficult community programs is to provide the well-acclaimed Arizona Burn Camp with makeovers and hair services. Chartering a tour bus each summer, Rolf and his 25 person team of stylists, makeup artists, and aestheticians head from Phoenix up to the cooler elevations of Prescott to serve over 100 children survivors of bad burns.

While, at first thought, salon services appear to have little to do with children’s burn recovery, this visit by Rolf’s traveling team has become a favorite highlight of the camp. Rolf always announces that this is a time for fun; wild berry hair colors, outrageous makeup, crazy styles, and ‘doing things at camp you were afraid to try at home.’ For scared and burned children (many neglected and forgotten), this free professionally-guided hair and makeup expression is a day of inspiration and joy. Of the many wonderful activities the camp provides, the arrival of the Rolf bus creates a remarkable level of excitement even amongst the children's families.

Founded in 1967, the Foundation for Burns and Trauma assists burn victims and their families in becoming burn survivors through rehabilitation, treatment and research; the reduction of death and injury from burns and fire through prevention education; and to serve as an advocacy partner for the prevention of trauma associated with other injuries. The Foundation believes that most burns are preventable through the education of both the community and its children. As part of Rolf’s vision of 'Intelligent Beauty' and respect for the joy of life, the Arizona Burn Camp illustrates ‘beauty is as beauty does.’

Approximately one hundred young burn survivors attend the week-long Arizona Children’s Burn Camp, 'Camp Courage,' up at the Pine Summit campground in the Prescott National Forest each year. Lots of smiles are seen in the cool pines while campers are horseback riding, mountain biking, fishing, swimming, performing skits, making crafts, and pushing their personal skills during the ropes course. Camp Courage attendance is encouraged for all our young friends who have been hospitalized for their burn injuries (ages 6 – 15 for Campers and ages 16 – 20 for Counselors-In-Leadership-Training).
