Finding the Right 'Do for You

We all (secretly) know our natural hair color and know what shade of gloss makes our pout pop, but do you know your face shape? Find a mirror and take out last season's plum lipstick for an art project that will bring you a step closer to finding your ideal look. First, pull your hair back and out of your face. Next, trace the outline of your face with the lipstick on the mirror in front of you. Now step back to compare which shape you see with the descriptions below to figure out which face shape matches with yours. Now that you know your face shape, here is a quick guide to what styles to look for and, most importantly, what to avoid for your face shape.

Oval

It is 1.5 times as long as it is wide and the forehead is a little wider than the jaw. As the most versatile face shape, an oval shape can handle almost any type of hairstyle. The oval shape is considered ideal because it is proportional and balanced. Find one of your best features and frame it with a terrific cut. If people constantly compliment you on your gorgeous eyes, blunt or side-swept bangs might be a great idea. Layers are always a good choice for oval faces to accentuate facial features.

Oblong

An oblong face looks like an outstretched oval where the chin appears too long or slightly out of proportion with the forehead. To fix this, add the illusion of width. Add soft layers or go for a bob with bangs to create horizontal lines and fullness on the sides. Avoid styles that give too much volume on top because it will elongate your face more. Also, be careful with long hair and consider a v-shaped style where the length is primarily in the back.

Square

A squared face is usually wider than it is long with a square jaw-line. To soften this look, choose a hairstyle with long layers starting at the jaw-line and continue downwards. Choose styles that are full on top. Side-swept bangs are a great alternative to blunt bangs and will distract from hard lines. Avoid geometric shapes, like the bob, that can emphasize the square shape.

Heart-Shaped

A heart-shaped face is wide at the forehead and narrows to a small, sometimes pointy, chin. To bring the focus away from the chin, add face-framing layers that accentuate the cheekbones or brow-grazing bangs. Avoid harsh, choppy layers as they make the face look too round. Also, watch for too much height at the crown. It will give the appearance of a longer chin. A chin length bob looks great on heart-shaped faces because it creates a balanced look and gives fullness where it is needed.

Triangular

A triangular face shape is a reverse of the heart-shape where the jaw-line is wider and the face narrows at the cheek bones. With this style, you must be careful not to put too much weight of the haircut at the jaw line because it will make the face appear heavier. The best type of style for this face shape is a shorter style that balances the prominent jaw line. A shaggy cut works well because the added layers will give fullness to the upper part of the face.

Round

On a round face the distance between the cheeks is roughly equal to the distance between the forehead and the chin. The goal with your style is to create less volume around the face and add layers to elongate facial features. Soft, graduated layers make the face appear slimmer and remove bulk from the sides of the face. Avoid curly and one-length, blunt short hair. It will create too much volume and your face will appear fuller than it really is.
